AGAINST MISTIFICATION OF HISTORY, AGAINST LEVELLING OF FREEDOM FIGHTERS AND OPPRESSORS

Trieste, laboratory of many experiments later deployed at countrywide level, is once again at the "forefront". Right now an initiative started by the Illy administration and readily taken over by the current right-wing administration is about to be implemented with the building in downtown Piazza Goldoni square of a monument to the "victims of all totalitarian regimes". This is just the last and most brazen episode of a process of mistification of history that started years ago and often saw Trieste at the forehead (for reasons which should deserve deeper enquiry elsewhere). Today that idea is ready to happen, as the city council has already requested the final and executive project for the square restoration, inclusive of the said monument.

What is the meaning of this monument? Behind its vague dedication the monument should remember - together - on one side all those assassinated by Fascism and Nazism for their opposition to the regime or because they were seen as racially dangerous, unworthy or ill-adjusted (Jews, Roms, the mentally ill, ...), and on the other side those killed at the end of WWII by what they call "communist totalitarism" in its "slave-communist" and "titoist" version.

This monument affaire is to us a personal question, as we come from families that suffered more than one "victim of totalitarism", the fascist and nazist one:

These are without doubt people fully included among those said monument should remember. Together with our beloved that monument, alas, should remember such "victims of communist totalitarism" as policeman Santo Camminiti, a member of the infamous Collotti band known for torturing hostages (already remembered , together with other his accomplices, on a monument at the entrance of Trieste's police headquarters), the fascist Arrigo Chebat and the member of SS Ottocaro Crisa. This we are not going to allow. We will not tollerate our beloved to be remembered together with those oppressing them, persecuting and killing them. This would be an insult, a debasement of their sacrifice.

Nor are we going to allow our beloved to be used to rewrite history into propaganda, because this is the one reason of that monument. Such propaganda starts with using vague and ambiguous terms as "victims" and "totalitarism". Our beloved were no victims, they choose to fight for what they believed in, knowing the risks they faced. Only the ideals they fought for are the reason for the public to remember them, everything else belonging to their relatives. "Our" monument would instead remember people not for the reasons they died for, just for the fact they died, overlooking the detail that some of the people to whom the monument is intended to could well be the material killers of other "victims of totalitarisms". Such monument would so together remember the assassins and the assassinated, putting on the same level the objectives and motivations our beloved fought for and the one fascists, SS, torturers and other such figures did, trying to present the later as victims of a "ideological intollerance", like peaceful dissidents killed just for their opinions. This is evidently one more mistification, because like our beloved they didn't just had ideals, they acted on them, and for their deeds they were executed.

The term totalitarism, borrowed from historiography, serves the purpose of blaming exclusively ideology for what happened, trying to relieve of any guilt those supporting Hitler and Mussolini, those who knew well the agenda and the practices of them and, just because of this, supported and financed them, for they expected and obtained huge profits. Mussolini and Hitler didn't seize power with help from the Divine Providence, they did it thanks to the money of the various Agnellis and Krupps. Behind these "peacefying" intentions there is a trend to make believe, putting on the same level the fascist and nazist butchers and those opposing them, that everybody fighting not simply for a return to the pre-fascist era, but for a deeply different society, was a criminal.

All this is done to influence the present time, because monuments are messages for today, not for the past. A present time everything but peacefied, where the reasons and motivations our beloved fought for are everything but exhausted.

We are determined to prevent by any means that monument to include the people we proudly descend from and we turn now on you to inform you about what's going on, as we believe this to be a serious matter with consequences on a countrywide level.

We would appreciate you to show us your support by adding your name to this petition we're going to deliver to the mayor of Trieste:

To the Mayor of Trieste
We declare our opposition in face of the intention by the city authorities of Trieste to dedicate the monument bound to be built in Piazza Goldoni square in Trieste to the "victims of totalitarian regimes". Such a monument would be a serious insult to the memory of those who lost their lives fighting against fascism and nazism, putting them at the same level as their persecutors, fascists, nazists and their sideliners of any nationality killed at the end of WWII. We invite the Mayor of Trieste, a city without a downtown monument to the victims in the fight for freedom from Nazism and Fascism, to give up with such a project and better dedicate the monument to somebody or something else.
